A public lecture by Geert Ham on the Dromos of the Saqqara Serapeum. When the Ptolemies took control of Egypt, the Serapeum was already a sanctuary of national importance with a history stretching back to the Eighteenth Dynasty. The talk looks at the Hellenistic decorative programme first excavated by Auguste Mariette, and at spaces shaped by the side-by-side presence of Greek and Egyptian traditions, with a strong focus on materiality.
